Commercial Screening
Our Niton XRF scanner is used in numerous Industrial and Commercial applications where portability, accuracy and speed of analysis are important. XRF screening in the vast majority of cases is the most cost effective method of testing various types of raw materials and finished products. Listed on this page are some of the common applications. New applications are being discovered and developed rapidly. Feel free to contact us about your particular problem and let us help determine if XRF can be part of the solution.
Consumer Products

CPSIA 2008 established levels for the lead content allowed in toys and other products marketed to children age 12 and under. This new law has affected many manufacturers, distributors and retail outlets and carries a substantial fine of $100,000 per offense.
The limits currently set for lead are 600 ppm as of February 14, 2009 with a further reduction to 300 ppm on August 14, 2009. The CPSIA 2008 regulations call for continuing reductions in lead content to below 90 ppm by August 2011. Our Thermo Niton XRF scanner will detect lead levels well below the 90 ppm target and each scan typically takes only 20-30 seconds.
There are requirements for the sale of products in California--Proposition 65 and similar legislation in Canada. XRF can be used to rapidly screen for heavy metals in consumer products and save your company both time and money by not having to perform lab testing on every product.
Metal Alloy Analysis
Positive Material Identification is where our XRF scanner will identify material content and qualify an alloy typically in less than 30 seconds. We can easily distinguish between similar alloys, such as AISI 304, 316, and 321. For industries that require certification a report is generated on the results from the scanner that compares the sample composition to nominal chemistries for selected alloys.
We can also use XRF to rapidly separate valuable scrap metals for recycling or Identify raw materials that are mixed in stock.

Some typical Quality Control applications include:
- AQL Screening
- Incoming Inspection of raw materials
- Finished Goods Testing
- Analysis of Customer Returns
RoHS and WEEE Compliance
The European Union (EU) has enacted directive EU 2002/95/EC that restricts the amount of toxic metals, namely lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium that can be used in electronic assemblies. Since then, California’s Proposition 65, China RoHS, and other similar legislation has been implemented in countries around the world. Our XRF analyzer provides a fast, effective and nondestructive means of screening solders, components and packaging for compliance. Applications included but not limited to are:

- AQL Screening
- Incoming Inspection of components and electronic assemblies
- New part qualification
- Analysis of Customer Returns for recycling (WEEE)
Soil Analysis

Soils can be quickly analyzed for lead and other toxic metal contamination on-site or by using prepared samples. Our portable XRF scanner can be used for home or industrial site inspection, to map hot spots for remediation or monitor a site during cleanup making the process more efficient and substantially reducing cost.
